Orisa Adoko is a god of the Yorubas. This god is also known as Byeri among the Fang people of Gabon, where he is treated as an ancestral link for summoning spirits and communing with forebears. It is a human figure with feathers covering its head and strings of beads tied around its neck and waist. Orisa Adoko is connected to witchcraft and sorcery. Iyami or Byeri’s spirit/deity is a variation of the god found across the coastlines of West Africa to the northern hemisphere.
After the death of a lineage’s patriarch or matriarch, her/his head or skull would be preserved in a cylindrical container. The carved human figure sitting on it serves as the spirit guarding the remains of the transited ancestor and her/his relics kept inside the container. The container houses the soul of the departed. The entire object is constantly appeased through libation, which involves the use of palm-oil, gin, etc. Orisa Adoko is particularly known as Byeri in some other parts of Africa.
