The sculpture is a casted image of Ooni Luwo, the only female traditionally ruler of the ancient city of Ife. She remembered praised as the African Queen who paved a path from where we call the Southern Nigeria today to ile-Ife in about 1000 AD. History remembers her are one development-oriented female ruler. An oral tradition has it that she was walking around the ancient city of Ife when her regalia got splashed with mud. Ooni Luwo was so upset by this that she ordered the construction of paved ways to all the public and religions places in the city. Archeology confirms that:
Pavements… are widespread in Africa. Potsherd pavements are the most common types of pavements known in West Africa. The most consistent reports about excavated pavements in West Africa have so far come from Ife, specifically the sites: Oduduwa College, Lafogido, Ita Yemoo, Olabara’s Land and Woye Asiri Land.” The pavements embellished the courtyards and often had altars built at the end against walls. Many of the pavements had regular and geometric patterns, often emphasized by the incorporation of white quartz pebbles in their surface. Such pavements have been found on prehistoric sites from Tchad in the northeast of Togo in the west.
