Osanyin (also called Osain) is the god in charge of all plants’ lives, healing and magic. The deity is known as a powerful wizard; master/source of all magical spells, crafts that is derive from the wild and other unplumbed parts of nature. Herbal properties or medicinal/magical properties that are derivable from plants are recognised for both their spiritual and physical potency which is associated with Osanyin.
It is believed that Ase, which is the force that drives the universe partly inheres in plants. Those with the knowledge of plant-life and their power can access the cosmic force (Ase) that is lurked in plants. The rites that are indigenous to the faith of the Yoruba would be nothing without the inclusion of plants and herbs superintended over Osanyin. It is the magic power of Osanyin that is used to found shrines dedicated to other Yoruba gods. Hence, without him, none of the ceremonies held in connection with the Orisa will hold and if held, will fail in realising its purpose.
