This sculpture represents an image of Aje, the goddess of wealth. Aje is another principal deity among the 401 gods that are being venerated in Yoruba culture. The main function of Aje is to provide sufficient wealth and a greater economic benefit for whoever worships her. Aje is the daughter of Olokun. Nevertheless, Olokun himself respects her; that is why she is often referred to as Aje-Olokun.
In fact, some are of the belief that it is essential to praise Aje before anyone can get the favour of Olokun. This is due to the fact that Aje is the only daughter of Olokun and Olokun loves her dearly. Items needed to make sacrifice to Aje include banana, cooked beans, ekuru (beans meal), oyin (honey), among others.
