The festival is associated fertility and is celebrated yearly in the ancient city of Ile-Ife. As the custodian of all Yoruba deities in Ile-Ife, the Ooni is a major role player in the making of sacrifice to the spirit of Osara. The sacrificial materials include three doves and lagoon water. Osara and Olokun are believed to be rival queens of Oduduwa and their rivalry is believed to exist till today. This rivalry is believed to be shown in the way the ocean and the lagoon never mix.
